On Wednesday, May 6, legendary video game creator and Nintendo Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto announced in a Nintendo Direct that a Star Fox 64 remake was on its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. The game’s protagonist, Fox McCloud, previously made a cameo appearance in the Super Mario Galaxy movie, leading many gamers to speculate that his namesake franchise would see a revival.

Fellow video game creator and Nintendo Senior Executive Officer Yoshiaki Koizumi explained: “Star Fox is based on the Nintendo 64 game, Star Fox 64, but the visuals have been completely updated. All of the characters in the game have also been redesigned.”

Through cutscenes (some of which are new additions) and gameplay footage, we get a glimpse into this remastered classic. Star Fox team leader Fox McCloud, copilot Falco Lombardi, tech wiz Slippy Toad, and veteran pilot Peppy Hare are tasked with defending the Lylat System from the mad scientist Andross and his merciless army.

The player traverses the campaign using a spaceship, a land vehicle, and a submarine. Throughout the game, you experience a variety of planets, an asteroid field, and the inside of a nebula. The campaign can be played alone or in co-op mode where one player is responsible for piloting the spaceship while the other takes on the gunner role.

In addition to campaign mode, there is Battle Mode, where two teams of four chase after shared objectives while trying to take each other out. The online objectives vary based on which of the three settings you find yourself in: Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y. Battle Mode can be achieved locally on your Switch 2, across multiple Switch 2 consoles using GameShare mode, or online with both domestic and international players.

Players can choose one of the characters as their online avatar. The GameChat feature syncs the player’s head movements and facial expressions with the character to make it look as though the avatar is speaking. Another unique feature is that the game can be played using the Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo 64 controller.

Nintendo is likely to succeed at drawing in both longtime fans and players new to the franchise when Star Fox becomes available for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026, priced at $49.99 digitally and $59.99 for a physical copy.
